My sister and I took some of these pictures earlier in the day and then later in the evening. So I know that the lighting is different in some of these pictures! Halloween is definitely different the older you get. I used to be a hardcore trick-or-treater and now, my sister and I party at home watching our favorite TV shows. Of course, we had to throw in some candy because, hey, it's Halloween! We definitely felt the need to spoil ourselves a bit tonight...and take weird pictures.
I know this picture is kind of weird, but I have a little story behind it. I am in an interior design class and my teacher kept on talking on and on about how different sides of the brain need to be up and running to get the best out of one's creativity/artistic ability. I believed this, somewhat. A couple weeks later, after going on and on about this concept, she conducts a class activity of the actual experiment. Everyone had to copy this drawing on the side exactly as it appeared. Easy. They were lines and nothing was too complicated here. I drew it and it looked just like the original graphic. There was one slight difference: the girl's head looked like it was turned at a slight 5-10 degree angle towards the center. I don't know why. No matter how many times I positioned the frame of her face, she still had her head turned a tiny bit. The difference was so minimal that I don't think anyone would really notice unless they had the same perspective or eye as me. The people around me thought it was identical, but I could still see that slight difference.
At the end of class, the teacher had us take the same picture, but draw it upside down. This would change our perception of the picture. We would not think that it was a girl's face and that we were drawing the eye, the brown, the lips, or the hair. We would be seeing them as something else: lines, circles, shapes, anything basic and easy. I did not think this was easy. I was mad! How dare she say I'll draw this picture better when I was already as close as duplicating this exact picture as it was going to get! It even seemed more difficult to draw this picture upside down.
The entire process of redrawing this picture was so painful to me. It was upsetting. I wasn't willing to believe in this super artistic ability mumbo jumbo coming from the left side of my brain. (Or was it right?)
As you can guess, I learned a little something. When I flipped the drawing over and matched it with my first drawing and the original photo, I was astounded. Wow. Wow! My mouth dropped open. The second picture, the one I drew upside down, was exactly identical to the original copy of the drawing that our teacher had given us. Still, wow.
So, I'm still learning and that's good. Never ever close your mind (or heart) to anything new. You will learn and absorb so much of the knowledge that the world has to offer you by being open to the learning experiences that come your way. You will (1) feel smarter and (2) understand life in general.
I will try to post the actual drawings. I didn't think of taking a picture of some quick drawings when I turned them in.
I have not been able to resolve my sideways video issue so here are some pictures! I kind of toured New York and kind of didn't. My friend had to work and go to school so I just went shopping and kind of lived my life as a New Yorker. It was a blast! I would go back to live there if I had the money. It is incredible! Such a busy and exciting city. Utah is not enough for me after I have been to New York. I'm going to keep my hopes up in moving there someday.
It's been a while since I posted! Here's a quick update: I was in New York this past weekend! Ahhh, it was so much fun! My good friend Margaret let me stay with her and we explored the city, shopped way too much, and just enjoyed catching up on life. I mad a video but it is being difficult because every time I play it, the video goes sideways. (Probably because I filmed on my phone which made the images vertical.) I am going to try to get some pics up for this weekend so keep an eye out! Hopefully the video will be up too!
Ever been here? If you put me in a place with a lot of flowers and landscape, I will be pulling out my camera and snapping a million photos. My family and I went to the flower garden at Thanksgiving Point. Loved it! Definitely recommend visiting Thanksgiving Point any day.
